Training technical designers is a crucial process that bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in the fast paced realm of technology and design. I equip aspiring technical designers with the skills and expertise needed to navigate complex design software, understand industry standards, and effectively communicate design concepts. Through a combination of hands-on experience, projects, and theoretical modules, students learn to translate creative visions into tangible, functional designs. The class combines previous knowledge of garment construction, pattern making with the utilization of cutting-edge design tools and software. Additionally, technical designers are often trained to collaborate with cross-functional teams, fostering effective communication and teamwork. The students act as a member of every area in the design process. Technical design empowers my students to thrive in the dynamic and competitive landscape of design and technology, ensuring they can contribute effectively to the innovation and progress of the industry.

The Recreate Project

The culmination of each semester for BYU-Idaho Apparel Design students is marked by an exhilarating fashion show, showcasing their prowess in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) through the innovative "Re-create" project. While the instructions for this undertaking may seem straightforward, the complexity lies in the challenging work that follows.

At the project's inception, students are tasked with meticulously selecting a commercially-made jacket for recreation. The guidelines are clear: the new jacket must mirror the design lines and details of the original, adhering to its unique features such as closures, cuffs, and pocket types. The only permissible alterations extend to fabric, fit, and lining, allowing for individual creativity in the latter. Notably, the recreated jacket must comprise 12 or more pieces, with mandatory elements including pockets and a collar or hood.

Crucially, the project demands a full-scale, impeccably finished jacket, reinforcing the students' proficiency in both design and craftsmanship. Leveraging their previously digitized personal sloper, students embark on a comprehensive process involving hours tracking, pattern creation, printing, cutting, sewing, and the eventual development of a tech pack for documentation.

The meticulous nature of the project is underscored by a list of deliverables, including a Jacket Pre-Approval submission, a comprehensive Time Sheet documenting a minimum of 18 hours of dedicated work, Cutter's Must with an accompanying design sketch, a screenshot featuring pattern pieces in PDS (Pattern Design Software) and the Project Model, a preliminary photo of paper pattern pieces on fabric before cutting, a Tech Pack spreadsheet outlining essential details, and finally, a compelling Project Presentation. This multifaceted approach ensures students not only master CAD skills but also gain valuable insights into the entire apparel design process, culminating in a dynamic presentation and participation in the highly anticipated fashion show.

A well-made tech pack ensures that the final product matches the designer's vision by providing clear instructions on everything from patterns to colors. It plays a key role in maintaining quality, meeting deadlines, and ensuring success.
